Safe Sanctuaries Training

Here in the Wyoming Annual Conference, Safe Sanctuaries training is mandatory for all persons serving a congregation as a pastor in any catagory of ministry.

Training is recommended for anyone working with children or youth either as staff or as a volunteer. Training sessions have been held in the past. For those who have not been able to attend a training event, more are being scheduled.

The following resources may be helpful for anyone in need of training to meet the mandate, or who simply wants to know more about reducing the risk of child abuse in the church.

The Basic Level "Nuts and Bolts" Training is designed to help everyone reduce the risks in their church and ministries. This training is a minimum standard for all who are appointed to serve a congregation. Local church policies and procedures will determine what local church workers need this training. Those who work with children, youth, or vulnerable adults at Wyoming Conference or District events will also participate in the Basic Level training. Successful completion of this training will be valid for three years.

The objectives of the course are:

1. define abuse and neglect and help you know how to recognize the signs and consequences of abuse and neglect;

2. identify risk factors as well as to help you know and implement basic safety and appropriate discipline procedures'

3. help you understand reporting requirements and be able to report abuse according to you church or ministries protocol. Also to help you know how to respond to children,, youth, and vulnerable adults when abuse or neglect is suspected to occur;

4. help establish appropriate behavior with children, youth, and vulnerable adults.

While helpful, neither of these trainings is designed to help churches develop their policy and procedures.

For those who are just becoming familiar with Safe Sanctuaries, there is an "Introduction Assignment." that might be helpful. Joy Melton's book, Safe Sanctuaries (either the blue covered or green covered), will be needed. (This was a required pre-class assignment for the Fall 2007 "Nuts and Bolts" training. There is no longer a pre-class assignment.)
