Haiti Earthquake Resouces

1/16/2010

The United Methodist Church is responding to the catastrophic earthquake that has devastated Haiti. There are many resources available to help individuals and congregations to help in a variety of ways. United Methodists have raised more than $1 million for relief work in Haiti.

The donations to the United Methodist Committee on Relief will support its efforts to respond to those most in need following the devastating Jan. 12 earthquake. An estimated 2 million to 3 million people need immediate assistance.

Many people are asking how they can go about volunteering for relief/rebuilding in Haiti. One of the places you can find an answer to that question is a new page on the Global Ministries website

Much of the information is located on a special page of the denominations website www.UMC.org. You can find it by clicking here. The page includes news stories, ways to donate, requests for health kits and other emergency supplies and more.

Our Northeast Jurisdiction UMCOR Coordinator, Greg Forrester, has requested that Wyoming Conference churches collect hygiene kits for Haiti. The current supply will be quickly exhausted responding to the earthquake in Haiti.  Persons can go to www.haitipartnership.com and click "personal hygiene kits" on the left side of the home page to find what to collect for the kits.  They may then be sent to one of the following collection sites:

  • Tunkhannock UMC, Dorranceton UMC and Noxen UMC for Wilkes-Barre District
  • Chinchilla UMC and Honesdale UMC for Scranton District
  • Norwich UMC, Whitney Point UMC and Greene UMC for Oneonta District
  • Vestal UMC and Endwell UMC for Binghamton District
  • or The Conference Center

100% of all monetary donations to Haiti made payable to the Annual Conference or UMCOR go directly to serve the needs of the people there.  Ministry Shares pay for administration and overhead.

Other information from Greg Forrester can be found at the Northeastern Jurisdiction Volunteers in Mission website.
